Theme Reads MARRIAGE OF (IN)CONVENIENCE
This month NPOB takes a look at one of the most popular and enduring storylines in romance novels-the Marriage of Convenience. Or is that sometimes Inconvenience? That would probably depend upon who's getting the convenience and who's providing it. The hero may marry the heroine for her money, to get an heir, or because his bothersome family approves of her and won't leave him alone until he at last ties the knot. Or the heroine may be the one who decides upon the match, perhaps to protect or gain an inheritance, to give her illegitimate child a name, or to keep her relentless family from driving her crazy with their endless demands for her to make a "good match." Sometimes, the hero and heroine are both innocents in the arranged wedding, if they're unfortunate enough to possess domineering parents who take care of such details for them and won't take "no" for an answer. However it comes about, the hero and heroine wind up together, with one or both of them feeling unloved and unwanted apart from the "convenience" he or she provides. In the beginning, the road they travel is usually a rough and rocky one. . .until circumstances collide to bring them closer together in a number of interesting ways. Before long, friendship replaces dislike, respect replaces arrogance, and love and passion follow, falling hard upon the unsuspecting pair without warning. What began as a Marriage of Convenience (or Inconvenience) finishes with a happy ending, becoming a Marriage of True Love.
