Pirates, buccaneers, privateers, sailors, shipping magnates and spies -- it doesn't get any better in the hero category for romance novels. Or more adventuresome, either. Unique from their land-bound counterparts, men who take to the seas are a special breed -- willingly facing the dangers and demands of life aboard a ship. Did we say willingly? Actually, most of them take to their ships with exuberance, happily drawn to a life on the endless seas by a compelling, innate desire. Nothing can stop them -- be it the fiercest storm, falling upon dangerous and unknown lands, or facing a deadly enemy. The pleasures of the open sea far outweigh the bad. Captain Jack Sparrow sums it up perfectly in the recently released movie, Pirates of the Caribbean, when he finally takes the helm of the ship he's fought so hard to regain, saying, "Now, show me that horizon." Special men, definitely. And the women who would gain their hearts must be equally special. A pampered, delicate flower need not apply -- unless beneath her elegant garb she possesses the heart to face every manner of adventure, from the special demands of life aboard a ship (storms, seasickness, bad food, being the only female) to being in the complete control of the captain, whether he's an honorable spy in his country's service or a swarthy, swashbuckling pirate. These are men who make their own rules; on their ships they're the ultimate law, and any woman who falls into such a man's grasp is at his mercy. Capturing his heart, and surviving the undertaking, require both wit and bravery of the highest order. Combine such high-stakes romance with the grand adventure of the bounding main and you've got yourself a unique, fantastic and gripping read. This month, pick up a few of our terrific Theme Reads selections and set sail for an exciting voyage on the High Seas!
