It would be impossible to sum up the romance genre's fascination with Scotland in one or two words; there's just so much to love about the country, its people, and its amazing history. The physical nature of the country is both beautiful and challenging, from the gentle, rolling hills and farmlands of the low country to the majestic lochs and mountains of the highlands - parts of which are so austere and rugged that only the heartiest souls can make a life there. But the Scots have always been ready for a challenge, from the their Pictish and Celtic beginnings through the many brave battles they fought to maintain freedom from England to today, when the unique culture and traditions of Scotland not only survive, but thrive.
Consider what the Scots have given us. Golf, for one. Scotch whiskey, for another. Then there's the bagpipes, haggis, Scottish shortbread, honey and oatmeal, tartans and such romantic historical figures as William Wallace (Braveheart) and Bonnie Prince Charlie. The list could go on and on. Oh, and let's not forget the most important thing of all: kilts. After all, what woman can resist a man in a kilt, baring his legs to the world and leaving so much more (what do they wear under those delightful garments, hmm?) to the imagination than a mere pair of pants can do.
This month NPOB salutes the Scottish romance. When these books first began to appear on the scene they quickly stole our hearts. The history and beauty of Scotland, the brave and heroic men and women, the romantic mystery of a culture so different and unique, the soft, rolling burr of the Scottish language - all of it played a part in making Scottish romances some of the most popular that the genre has ever seen.
