Dark alleyways and foggy moors, secret passageways and hidden compartments, rumors, gossip, cryptic codes and undetectable poisons?they may seem mysterious to us, but they're all part and parcel for the intrepid sleuths and snoops who make up the focus of this month's NPOB theme reads. These captivating reads contain some of our favorite heroines: those smart, daring women who bravely tackle danger and mystery to solve baffling crimes. Our fearless detectives come in all types and ages, from the steely-eyed officer of the law serving in the NYPD Homicide Unit who tracks down techno-baddies to the unassuming but snoopy Great Aunt who stumbles across old secrets and modern murder while on holiday at a rustic bed and breakfast. And we can't leave out the private investigator who takes on all comers will ing to pay her fee, or the forensic pathologist who suddenly sees a pattern of mysterious deaths landing on her examining table. The crime scene can take place in modern America or the English countryside, in a high-rise apartment or ancient estate, and the cast of surrounding characters can range from the truly frightening to the amusingly odd, but none of that really matters when a master mind has set out to reveal the bad guy's dastardly deeds. Regardless of time, place or setting, we're in for a real treat as we sit on the edge of our seats, following the skillful dismantling of the most perplexing crimes at the hands of one of our superior sleuths or snoops. Below is a list of some tantalizing "Sleuths and Snoops" reads that we've snooped out for you.
