mong the most popular titles for Regency romances are the "Miss" titles. We're sure you know the ones we mean. "Miss Countrybred's Dilemma," "Miss Debutante Tames The Rake," "Miss Bluestocking and the Wicked Earl." These are all make-believe titles, but they might as well be real, so similar are they to the many wondering offerings among Regency "Miss" titles.
These are special regencies, featuring charming and amusing young heroines in a vast variety of situations. She might be a highly-born young lady who finds herself in the power of a handsome, but Rakish and socially tarnished guardian, or she might be a poor but intelligent young woman who discovers that taking a job as a governess means dealing with the dark, mysterious, widowed master of the house. Sometimes our "Miss" has a habit of getting herself into the worst possible situations, stumbling from one disaster to the next and leaving it to the long-suffering hero to rescue her. On other occasions, she may be the unwitting object of a wager between a pair of Rakes, resulting in an outcome surprising to everyone involved. Some "Misses" see themselves as matchmakers, and diligently ply their supposed skills on those around them without taking care to watch over the susceptibility of their own hearts. Others are burdened with overbearing mamas or family members bent on finding her a good match, regardless of the "Miss's" desires.
Regency "Misses" can be heiresses, and therefore subject to unwanted marriages to "secure" their properties, or they can be poor and powerless, and therefore subject to unwanted marriages to "secure" their futures. But regardless of how things start out, our heroine is a smart, determined young woman who plays a definite hand in sorting out her love life.
And what does our hero see in a mere "Miss?" Though mannerly and well-bred, she can be quite different from the stuffy, proper, blue-blooded ladies of the ton who care more about proper lineages than they do about love. A Regency "Miss" can be adventurous, charming, funny, not afraid to laugh or even do something outrageous in public. She's not alarmed by the idea of love, or at the prospect of taming a notorious Rake. In short, our "Miss" can be an irresistible lure for even the most hardened or lordly gentleman, and her many charms are well able to overcome every obstacle that lays in her path toward gaining true love.
