Lieutenant Colonel Victor Bramwell has seen battle firsthand serving in the British army fighting against Napolean. He’s been seriously wounded in battle, and carries the burden of injury even months later. But nothing prepares him for Spindle Cove and Miss Susanna Finch.
Bramwell has found himself in Sussex, England headed for a meeting with Sir Lewis Finch, celebrated inventor of weaponry and the key to Bramwell’s return to the role he desires. As Bramwell makes his way into the village of Spindle Cove, he has a chance encounter with Susanna Finch, an encounter that will not only change the course of his day, but the course of his life.
Susanna has worked hard to develop Spindle Cove into a refuge of sorts for “gently bred young ladies” who are deemed unbiddible, too intelligent, or too spirited for their families to mold into the roles expected by society. Susanna is intelligent and articulate, a born leader who has made it her life’s work to help the women who end up on her doorstep. She is fiercely independent and strong, but not strong enough to fight the instant attraction she feels for Bramwell.
Bramwell has been commanded to muster and train a militia, and it’s not long before the entire village is caught up in the preparations. Susanna continues to be a welcome thorn in Bramwell’s side, distracting him from his duties and occupying his thoughts day and night. From the very beginning, Susanna knows Bram even better than he knows himself because they are so fundamentally similar, so much the opposite sides of the same coin. Their interplay and the peripheral stories of other villagers and Spindle Cove ladies are perfectly woven into a captivating tale that balances a blossoming romance with fun, family and hijinks galore.
Author Tessa Dare displays a masterful hand with witty text and dialogue, from a stray lamb named “Dinner” to the doubletalk between Susanna and Bram. The sense of intimacy between the couple is palpable, beautifully written with the perfect balance of sensuality and desire laced with the humor that seasons Bram and Susanna’s relationship.
