Out-of-work investigative reporter Nela Farly is happy to help out her sister when she wins a trip to the tropics, so she boards a plane and departs LA for frigid Oklahoma. There, she will fill in as an assistant at a foundation. What she never expects is that her investigative skills and her unusual ability will both come in very useful.
Nela has recently lost her fiance to an IED—and ever since, she has been able to hear the thoughts of cats when she looks into their eyes. Nela has convinced herself that she’s only hearing things, but when she hears a cat say, "...board rolled on the second step," she finds herself paying attention. The cat in question is Jugs, who belonged to the recently-deceased COO of the foundation. She died after a fall on her outside stairs. Nela immediately realizes that the COO was murdered and sets in motion an investigation that will uncover an unbalanced person who will stop at nothing to achieve certain ends.
The murder is only one part of a bizarre series of events at the foundation, including a car set on fire, slashed Native American baskets, and a missing necklace. On Nela’s first night staying in the former COO’s apartment to take care of Jugs, she finds herself the victim of a home invasion—something that also turns out to be connected to the murder. Nela’s abilities as an investigative reporter are key to solving the whole strange mess.
Also key to solving the puzzle is Steve Flynn, the owner of the local paper and himself an investigative journalist. He can provide the pieces that Nela can’t. They make a wonderful team, and romance clearly is also on the books for the pair.
What the Cat Saw is a cleverly crafted mystery filled with believable characters. The portrayal of Jugs is marvelous—the reader almost forgets he can’t actually talk. Cozy fans won’t want to put this one down until the very end, and they’ll all hope this is just the first in a new, wonderful series!
