India Black and the Gentleman Thief (A Madam of Espionage Mystery)
By  Carol K. Carr
Berkley Prime Crime
February 2014

The fourth India Black mystery takes readers back to Victorian England where India has an unusual life. She's a madam, operating a high-class brothel. However, she also teams up with French, a spy for Her Majesty's government, and Vincent a young street urchin. The trio takes on unusual assignments for Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli.

This time, it's a client that lands them in hot water. Colonel Mayhew leaves an envelope for India, but she and French have little chance to study the contents, a bill of lading for a shipment to India, before they're set upon by three ruffians who attack them in India's own house. Determined to demand answers of Mayhew, they hunt him down, only to discover he's been murdered. India and French are at the top of the suspect list for the investigating officer. They choose to ignore the police, and head to the docks to find their own answers. They uncover one link to the crime, but India doesn't want to connect the dots. That link leads to the gentleman thief who was once one of her lovers. She's reluctant to admit he might be involved in a plot to send illegal goods to India, against the best interests of England.

Carr's books are espionage capers combining history, mystery, and touches of romance. They're also filled with comic relief in the form of Vincent, and the maddening Marchioness of Tullibardine. India Black and the Gentleman Thief is another fun entry in the series. Each book deals with life in the bordello, but also includes details of life in Victorian England. This time, the docks and shipping, as well as military offices are included in the details that bring India Black's world to life. It's another fast-paced, enjoyable caper with unusual, fun characters.
