Mississippi Blood: A Novel (Penn Cage Novels)
By Greg Iles
Penn Cage is the mayor of racially troubled Natchez, Mississippi. His father Dr. Tom Cage is on trial for murdering his former black nurse, lover and mother of his child. Everything is about to explode in Mississippi Blood, the third book in Greg Iles' The Natchez Burning triology.
I eagerly awaited this final book and was not disappointed. It appears no one is telling the truth. Murders and rapes at the hands of the Double Eagles, a group worse than the KKK have kept racial tensions on edge. Events going back to 1968 are brought to the surface. As long as members of this hate filled group are still alive people are afraid to speak out. Tom Cage's trial is the background for all the past to come boiling to the surface. Quentin, his lawyer, seems to be senile and inept, but he has a few tricks up his sleeve. The courtroom battle is causing threats and murders to keep people quiet and from telling the truth. Just when the trial seems to be ending there are more twists and turns that I never saw coming.
This book had me on the edge of my seat to the very last page. The writing and details paints a very vivid and frightening picture. A great ending for the final installment of this thrilling novel. When I read the last page all I could say was WOW! Iles never disappoints.
