On Her Majesty's Frightfully Secret Service (A Royal Spyness Mystery)
By Rhys Bowen
The 11th installment of this wonderful series finds Lady Georgiana Rannoch - Georgie to her friends - once again abandoned by her beau, Darcy. At loose ends in Darcy's family castle in Ireland, Georgie is delighted to receive a letter from her best friend Belinda. Belinda has gotten herself into a spot of trouble and has gone to an isolated village in Italy to wait it out. Georgie knows she must visit her friend and offer all the support she can. She is less delighted to find a letter from Queen Mary, her cousin, in the post, but she hopes it will offer an opportunity to receive the Royal Family's blessing upon her impending marriage to Darcy and allow Georgie to relinquish her claim to the English throne. (35th in line for that honor, Georgie is quite certain it will never fall to her to serve.)
As luck would have it, Her Majesty has a task for Georgie in the same remote village that she'll be visiting her friend in: join a house party and keep an eye on the Prince of Wales and that annoying Mrs. Simpson. Georgie is all for killing two birds with one stone and takes up the journey with enthusiasm. She's just started enjoying herself when terrible things start to happen, including the murder of one of the houseguests. Georgie never thought that keeping an eye on her cousin would put her in such danger - she even begins to suspect that she is next on the assassin's list. She must use all her cleverness and sleuthing skills to find the culprit before he crosses her off.
As always, Ms. Bowen's writing is fluid and well-paced. It's lovely to see Georgie growing up and starting to stand up for herself. You won't want to stop turning the pages until you know that Georgie and her family are safe!
