Product Description:

For anyone who has ever wondered “What if?,” this engaging novel provides a sweet, funny look at friendship, romance, and second chances.

Every summer, four college friends hold a mini-reunion. They laugh, reminisce, and commiserate about their soul-sucking jobs. Maybe they should have listened to everyone who warned them to study something “practical.”

Then an unexpected windfall arrives—one million dollars, to be exact—with the stipulation that they use it to jump-start their new careers. Almost overnight, a professor, a bartender, a copywriter, and an administrative assistant reinvent themselves as a novelist, an event planner, a pastry chef, and a bed-and-breakfast owner. But the changes in their professional roles create unexpected turbulence in their personal lives, and soon the secrets and scandals from their past start to resurface.

A group of five English Majors from Thurwell College in upper state New York meet every summer. This year marks their tenth reunion and the discussion comes up about what would you do if you could go back and do it all over again. Beth Kendrick’s novel “Second Time Around” is about having the chance to redo your life.

The summer of the tenth reunion finds Jamie, Brooke, Arden, Caitlin and Anna musing about the paths they would take if they had a chance to go back and make different choices. Jamie Burton is now a bartender and her latest boyfriend has broken up with her via e-mail, she has had several broken engagements and is not in the career of her dreams. Brooke Asplind is a coordinator of alumni affairs at Thurwell but wants more out of life. Arden Henley is a successful lawyer but has health issues. Caitlin Johnson has earned her Ph.D. and is an assistant professor at Shayland College in Connecticut but after an affair with her boss ended badly her job is now in jeopardy. Anna McCauley, a copywriter, is married to Jonas but fertility problems have caused problems in their marriage. The death of Arden and the generosity of the million dollars she leaves the other four, with the stipulation that the money be used to “start over” gives them a second chance.

The women shared a dormitory in an old home that the College is selling. Brooke has always dreamed of owning a bed and breakfast and thinks the large house would be perfect. It is far from perfect and needs a lot of work but Brooke takes on the challenge and learns how to do most of the repair work herself. Of course she loves going to the hardware store when Everett is working. After her latest break up Jamie is ready for a change and joins Brooke, she has always wanted to use her abilities not in a bar but as a party planner. Anna needs a break from Jonas to decide where her marriage is going so shows up at the door. Her talents at cake baking can be used for the parties that Jamie plans. Caitlin quits her job and Brooke quickly offers her a room so she can take the time to work on her novel that she has always had too little time for. The women have things in their past that will resurface as they try to make fresh starts.

“Second Time Around” is about having a second chance to go back and change decisions made in the past, but Kendrick also explores the possibility that maybe the changes you dream of are not necessarily what you really want out of life. The story is not as well developed as it could be but is still a good summer read.
