Product Description:

The best-selling author of Girl Waits with Gun and Lady Cop Makes Trouble continues her extraordinary journey into the real lives of the forgotten but fabulous Kopp sisters.

Deputy sheriff Constance Kopp is outraged to see young women brought into the Hackensack jail over dubious charges of waywardness, incorrigibility, and moral depravity. The strong-willed, patriotic Edna Heustis, who left home to work in a munitions factory, certainly doesn’t belong behind bars. And sixteen-year-old runaway Minnie Davis, with few prospects and fewer friends, shouldn’t be publicly shamed and packed off to a state-run reformatory. But such were the laws—and morals—of 1916.

Constance uses her authority as deputy sheriff, and occasionally exceeds it, to investigate and defend these women when no one else will. But it's her sister Fleurette who puts Constance's beliefs to the test and forces her to reckon with her own ideas of how a young woman should and shouldn't behave.

Against the backdrop of World War I, and drawn once again from the true story of the Kopp sisters, Miss Kopp’s Midnight Confessions is a spirited, page-turning story that will delight fans of historical fiction and lighthearted detective fiction alike.

Miss Constance Kopp, Lady Sheriff of Bergen County, New Jersey, has her hands full with a new case involving a young runaway, Edna Heustis. Edna has fled an unwelcoming family home where she was more servant than family member, and her family wants her back. While Constance is busy arranging for Edna to get out of a quite unnecessary and questionable sentence that could involve years in a reformatory, Constance is handed another case involving another runaway, Minnie Davis.

Minnie is a runaway and is underage, having fled her family home with thoughts of romance and adventure on her mind. While romance never came to be, there has been plenty of adventure, enough to land her in the Bergen County jail. Constance hates to see the young woman railroaded into a long sentence in the reformatory, so she sets off to see what she can do to help Minnie find a better life going forward.

In the meantime, Constance has plenty to worry about at home. Marriage proposals are still pouring in from all over the country, with potential suitors having read about the “Lady Sheriff” and Constance’s sister, Norma, is still busy composing regretful responses to the letters. Constance and Norma have more to worry about, however, in regard to their sister, Fleurette, who is leading them on a merry chase of her own.

Miss Kopp’s Midnight Confessions is the third in author Amy Stewart’s wonderful series about the real-life Kopp sisters of Bergen County. Based on historical data and supplemented with fictional details as needed, the Kopp sisters come to life with unblinking honesty and a good dose of wit on the side. Constance is gruff, a no-nonsense woman with a fair share of baggage, and her sisters are equally compelling in their own ways. Miss Kopp’s Midnight Confessions is fast-paced and fun to read, full of historical insight and interesting storylines. Don’t miss this unique and bold series
