Product Description:

In this absorbing new entry in the acclaimed New York Times bestselling series, Scotland Yard’s Ian Rutledge is caught up in a twisted web of vengeance and murder.

On the north coast of Cornwall, an apparent act of mercy is repaid by an arrest for murder. Four young women have been accused of the crime. A shocked father calls in a favor at the Home Office. Scotland Yard is asked to review the case.

However, Inspector Ian Rutledge is not the first Inspector to reach the village. Following in the shoes of a dead man, he is told the case is all but closed. Even as it takes an unexpected personal turn, Rutledge will require all his skill to deal with the incensed families of the accused, the grieving parents of the victim, and local police eager to see these four women sent to the infamous Bodmin Gaol. Then why hasn’t the killing stopped?

With no shred of evidence to clear the accused, Rutledge must plunge deep into the darkest secrets of a wild, beautiful and dangerous place if he is to find a killer who may—or may not—hold the key to their fate.

Scotland Yard Inspector Ian Rutledge didn't expect to be sent to Cornwall to investigate an attempted murder. He certainly didn't expect that one of the accused would be someone he knew. And he never thought that a simple country case would turn into something so convoluted and twisted that it would take all his ingenuity to puzzle it out.

In post-World War I England, four young women from wealthy families have been accused by a local farmer of trying to drown the local banker's son. Also suffering from a blow to the head, the young man is in a coma and is unable to reveal what he knows about that tragic day. Rutledge must try to puzzle it all out using potentially unreliable witness statements. And why does a mysterious young woman visitor from the summer keep popping up as he pursues clues? Rutledge is sure she must be involved somehow, though none of the locals will tell him anything about her. Rutledge can find nothing to exonerate the accused, and he fears that they will surely all hang, even if innocent. He must do all he can to avert that fate.

This is a page-turning roller-coaster of a read. Rutledge goes down numerous false paths, taking the reader, breathless, with him. The characters are true-to-life and help modern-day readers understand what a nightmare the Great War was for everyone involved, on the fighting front or the home front. The grim realities of the post-war world are all too clearly on display. This book can be read as a stand-alone, but it will convey more to those who have read other books in the series. A wonderful can't-miss read for fans of historical fiction!
