Product Description:

The stakes are higher and more personal than ever for feline investigator Joe Grey when death comes to his beloved coastal California town in this twentieth installment of the enchanting cat mystery series.

While new father Joe Grey is overjoyed to teach his three young kittens about the world, he misses his cop work — secretly helping solve crimes alongside his human friends at Molena Point P. D. But when beautician Barbara Conley and one of her customers are found dead in the salon, Joe makes an exception, he heads for the crime scene. He has no idea that the kittens are following him, or how they will complicate the investigation.

But this is not the only danger to the kittens. A stranger is lurking around the home of Joe’s tabby lady, Dulcie, where the kittens were born. Both parents’ backs are up and their claws out, ready to protect their babies and to protect Wilma Getz, Dulcie’s human housemate.

As the death of the beautician becomes entangled with a gang of thieves working the village, Joe, Dulcie, Kit and Pan are all into the investigation; and they are led to unexpected connections, to the building of the new cat shelter and to a neighbor who becomes suddenly an unexpected part of the tangle.

Joe Grey fans will relish this latest installment following their favorite feline detective and his growing group of friends.

New life is infused into the series in this 20th volume - literally. Joe Grey and his lady Dulcie have a litter of three precious kittens. After some months of breathless waiting, Joe, Dulcie, and their humans discover that, yes, the kittens can talk, too, just like Joe Grey, Dulcie, and all their special feline friends. These three amazing kittens will keep their ancestors' legacy alive, especially calico Courtney, who clearly has a very special path laid out for her.

Though this book focuses heavily on the kittens and the developing relationships of some of the humans, there is still a mystery to be solved! Of course, all the talking cats play key roles in solving it. Not only is a ring of cunning car thieves active in the area, but there have been two murders that seem to be connected somehow. It will take all of Joe's cunning and stealth to uncover what's really going on at Molena Point.

This is another delightful installment in the series, especially given the arrival of the spunky kittens. The plot is well-paced, keeping the reader turning the pages. While this book can be read as a standalone, it's better to have read the full (and long!) series to understand the fullness of the relationships. However, this one is a decent starting-point for new readers, as it contains quite a bit of explanation about origins of the talking cats. Recommended!
