Product Description:

We know her name. We know of her naked ride. We don't know her true story.
We all know the legend of Lady Godiva, who famously rode naked through the streets of Coventry, covered only by her long, flowing hair. So the story goes, she begged her husband Lord Leofric of Mercia to lift a high tax on her people, who would starve if forced to pay. Lord Leofric demanded a forfeit: that Godiva ride naked on horseback through the town. There are various endings to Godiva's ride, that all the people of Coventry closed their doors and refused to look upon their liege lady (except for ‘peeping Tom') and that her husband, in remorse, lifted the tax.
Naked is an original version of Godiva's tale with a twist that may be closer to the truth: by the end of his life Leofric had fallen deeply in love with Lady Godiva. A tale of legendary courage and extraordinary passion, Naked brings an epic story new voice.

If you paid attention in school, you know about her from the poem by Alfred, Lord Tennyson. If you're a classic film buff, you know her from the 1955 movie starring the magnificent Maureen O'Hara. And if you're a glutton with expensive tastes, you know her from the decadent Belgian chocolates. Yes, it's Lady Godiva, the woman who rode her horse naked through the streets of Coventry to protest her husband imposing a crippling tax on the people.

Historical details about Lady Godiva are sketchy but author Eliza Redgold's polished and romantic novel Naked: A Novel of Lady Godiva brings both the era and the legend alive. Redgold fleshes out (sorry I couldn't help it) the life and personality of the woman on the horse with all the hair and introduces us to Lady Godiva as a brave and beautiful warrior, a fair and loyal ruler, and a spirited and uncompromising wife. With lovely descriptive passages, Redgold brings the harsh and brutal era alive, and even throws in a bit of a mystery. But make no mistake, at its core Naked is a romance, a love story between Godiva and her husband, the taciturn Lord Leofric of Mercia. He is not the brutal, cruel man that history describes but instead is a strong, fierce soldier, in love but confused by a wife who is his equal.

Redgold, the author of historical fiction, romance, and non-fiction, has an elegant writing style. Naked is the perfect book for someone looking for a story rich in historical details, featuring strong, earthy characters, fiery and passionate love scenes, and that all-important emotionally satisfying ending.
